Terraria has no quest markers, no cutscenes and no map arrow telling you where to go next, which is exactly why so many players stall out somewhere around the Dungeon and never see the endgame. The good news is that the game does have a fixed progression spine: a chain of bosses, each one unlocking the ores, accessories and biomes you need for the next fight. This Terraria walkthrough lays that chain out in order so you always know what to build, mine and kill next.

Short answer first: the intended route is King Slime and the Eye of Cthulhu, then your world evil boss (Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu), Queen Bee, Skeletron, then the Wall of Flesh to trigger Hardmode. After that it is Queen Slime and the three mechanical bosses, Plantera, Golem, the Lunatic Cultist, the four Celestial Pillars, and finally the Moon Lord. Everything below fills in the gear and preparation for each step.

Day one: base, NPCs and your first gear in this Terraria walkthrough

Chop wood immediately and build a sealed room with walls, a door, a table, a chair and a light source. That counts as valid housing and lets the Guide stay alive, and every extra room you add can host another NPC as they arrive. Mine copper or tin for a full armour set, then push down to iron or lead for an anvil and a better pickaxe. Your first real power spike comes from exploring surface chests and the Underground layer for accessories like the Hermes Boots, Cloud in a Bottle and Shiny Red Balloon, which you later merge at the Tinkerer’s Workshop. Smash any Shadow Orbs or Crimson Hearts you find in the Corruption or Crimson for the Musket or The Undertaker, plus the Band of Regeneration. Build long horizontal bridges of platforms across your arena area now, because almost every early boss fight is easier with room to run. A comfortable setup matters here too, since these sessions run long, so check a gaming chair buying guide before you commit to a marathon world.

Pre-Hardmode bosses in the correct order

King Slime is optional and can be summoned with a Slime Crown, but it is a good warm-up and drops the Slime Hook and Ninja gear. The Eye of Cthulhu is the real gate: build a Suspicious Looking Eye at a Demon or Crimson Altar, fight it at night on a flat arena, and use its Unicorn Horns or Lenses to progress. Next comes your world evil boss. Eater of Worlds is summoned by breaking three Shadow Orbs or using Worm Food in the Corruption, and drops Shadow Scales and Demonite. Brain of Cthulhu comes from Crimson Hearts or a Bloody Spine and drops Tissue Samples and Crimtane. Either path gives you a full tier of armour and the Nightmare or Deathbringer Pickaxe, which is what lets you mine Hellstone later. Queen Bee lives in a Larva-marked hive in the Underground Jungle and hands out the Bee Keeper, Bee’s Knees and Hive Pack. Finally, Skeletron guards the Dungeon; talk to the Old Man at the Dungeon entrance at night to start the fight, and beating him opens the Dungeon’s loot and unlocks the Clothier NPC.

Reaching Hell and summoning the Wall of Flesh

With Molten armour crafted from Hellstone Bars, you are ready for the point of no return. Ask the Guide for anything, then throw a Guide Voodoo Doll into lava while you are in the Underworld to summon the Wall of Flesh. Build a long, clear bridge across the Underworld first, because the Wall moves steadily toward you and never stops. Beating it shatters one of your Demon or Crimson Altars’ restrictions and permanently converts your world to Hardmode, spawning Cobalt, Palladium, Mythril, Orichalcum, Adamantite and Titanium ore, plus Hallow and stronger evil biomes. The Wall also drops your first emblem and one of the game’s defining weapons from a pool that includes the Ranger Emblem, Breaker Blade and Clockwork Assault Rifle. Precise movement matters a lot from this point on, and if your inputs feel mushy it is worth reading a gaming mouse buying guide or a best controllers for PC roundup.

Hardmode ramp-up and the three mechanical bosses

Smash altars with a hammer to seed Hardmode ores, but do it sparingly because each smash also spreads Corruption or Crimson blocks. Work up through Cobalt or Palladium, then Mythril or Orichalcum, then Adamantite or Titanium armour. Queen Slime, summoned with a Gelatin Crystal in the Hallow, is an easy stepping stone that drops wings-tier mobility gear. Then take on the three mechs in whatever order suits your class: The Destroyer (Mechanical Worm), The Twins (Mechanical Eye) and Skeletron Prime (Mechanical Skull). Each drops Hallowed Bars and one soul type, and all three must die before Plantera becomes available. Arena work pays off enormously here, so add heart lanterns, campfires, honey pools and a Bast Statue.

Plantera, the Jungle Temple and Golem

After all three mechs fall, Plantera’s Bulbs spawn in the Underground Jungle. Break one in a wide, walled-off jungle arena and fight her in an enclosed space so her hooks cannot chase you freely. Plantera drops the Temple Key, which opens the Lihzahrd Temple, and also unlocks the Truffle’s Autohammer for Shroomite armour and Chlorophyte-tier gear. Inside the temple, farm Lihzahrd Power Cells and use one on the Lihzahrd Altar to summon Golem. Golem’s Picksaw is the pickaxe you need for Lihzahrd Brick, and its drops feed the Beetle armour set via Beetle Husks from Post-Golem enemies. Duke Fishron (Truffle Worm bait in the Ocean) and the Empress of Light (kill a Prismatic Lacewing at night in the Hallow) are optional but drop some of the best weapons in the game.

Endgame: Lunatic Cultist, Celestial Pillars and Moon Lord

Post-Golem, cultists appear at the Dungeon entrance. Kill them to summon the Lunatic Cultist, and beating it starts the Lunar Events. Four Celestial Pillars spawn across the world: Solar, Vortex, Nebula and Stardust. Destroy the shield on each by killing about 100 nearby enemies, then break the pillar for its fragments, which craft the four endgame armour sets. When all four fall, the Moon Lord arrives after roughly a minute. Bring healing potions, a Nurse in your arena, and the best set for your class. His drops include the Meowmere, Star Wrath, Terrarian and Last Prism, plus the Luminite you need for Luminite Bars and the Zenith. Long endgame farming sessions are where display quality really shows, so a best gaming monitors guide and a solid gaming headset guide are worth a look before Moon Lord attempts. If load times between deaths annoy you, a best SSDs for gaming comparison is the cheap fix.

Events, optional content and what to do after Moon Lord

Terraria’s events layer on top of boss progression. Blood Moons, Solar Eclipses, Goblin Armies and Pirate Invasions can happen in Hardmode and drop useful accessories. The Pumpkin Moon and Frost Moon are wave-based events best attempted post-Plantera with a dedicated farm, and Martian Madness unlocks after Golem for the Influx Waver and UFO mount. The Old One’s Army, Terraria’s Dungeon Defenders crossover, has three difficulty tiers tied to your boss progress. After Moon Lord there is no further boss, so most players pivot to building megastructures, filling the Bestiary, chasing the Zenith, or restarting on Expert, Master or Journey mode, where drop pools and enemy stats change enough to feel like a new game.

Frequently Asked Questions About This Terraria Walkthrough

How long does it take to finish Terraria?

A focused first playthrough from a fresh world to the Moon Lord typically takes somewhere between 40 and 70 hours, depending on how much time you spend building and exploring. Players who chase every optional boss, event and item can easily pass 200 hours in a single world without running out of goals.

Should I follow a Terraria walkthrough on my first world?

Loosely, yes. Terraria hides its progression gates behind items rather than dialogue, so knowing the boss order saves hours of confusion, but you should still explore blind between fights. The discovery of biomes, chest loot and NPC unlocks is most of the fun, and a walkthrough only needs to tell you which boss comes next.

Can I skip bosses in Terraria?

Some bosses are genuinely optional, including King Slime, Queen Slime, Deerclops, Duke Fishron and the Empress of Light. Others are hard gates: the Wall of Flesh is required for Hardmode, all three mechanical bosses are required before Plantera, and Plantera is required before Golem and the endgame sequence.

Does difficulty mode change the Terraria walkthrough order?

No, the boss order stays identical across Classic, Expert, Master and Journey mode. What changes is enemy health and damage, plus extra Expert and Master exclusive drops such as treasure bags and pets, so higher difficulties simply demand better arenas, more potions and more careful accessory choices at each step.
