“Region” means two different things on Steam, and the fix depends on which one you need. To change your download region, open Steam → Settings → Downloads → Download Region and pick the closest server — this takes five seconds and only affects download speed. To change your store country, you must go to your Account details page on the Steam website, select Store Country, and complete a purchase using a payment method with a billing address in the new country; Valve limits this to once every three months. This guide covers both, plus in-game matchmaking regions, which Steam does not control at all.

Here are eight Steam multiplayer games where picking the right server region genuinely changes how the game feels.

How to Change Region on Steam: Download Region

This is the harmless one, and it is what most people actually need when downloads crawl.

Changing Your Download Region Step by Step

Open the Steam client, click Steam in the top-left menu, then Settings (Preferences on macOS). Select Downloads in the sidebar. Under Download Region, choose a city from the dropdown list. Steam will ask to restart the client; let it. Your library, purchases, prices and account are completely unaffected — this setting only determines which content server delivers game files.

Which Download Region Should You Pick?

The nearest one is usually best, but not always. Valve publishes real-time download statistics on its Steam Download Stats page, and during major launches a nearby region can be saturated while a city 500 miles away runs at full speed. If your download stalls at a low speed, try the next two closest cities before assuming your connection is the problem. If speeds are poor across every region, the bottleneck is likely your own network hardware rather than Steam; our router buying guide covers why older routers throttle sustained large transfers.

Other Download Fixes Worth Trying

Before blaming the region, check three things. Disable the bandwidth limit in the same Downloads settings page, since a previously set cap silently persists. Turn off “Throttle downloads while streaming”. And confirm that Steam is not deprioritising the download because a game is running. Wired Ethernet also transforms sustained download performance compared to congested Wi-Fi — see our networking adapter buying guide for the cheapest way to get a wired link to a distant room.

How to Change Region on Steam: Store Country

This is the one people usually mean when they ask about changing region for prices, and it is deliberately difficult. Valve treats store country as a reflection of where you actually live, not a preference toggle.

The Official Store Country Change Process

Go to the Steam website, sign in, open Account details, and find Store Country in the account information block. Click the change option and select your new country. Steam then requires you to complete a purchase using a payment method issued in that country, with a matching billing address. Until that purchase clears, the change stays pending. Wallet funds cannot be used to validate the change, and any existing wallet balance stays in its original currency, which can leave you with a balance you cannot easily spend.

Rules and Restrictions to Know First

Four limits catch people out. You can only change store country once every three months. Your games library is unaffected and nothing is lost, but pricing, currency and available payment methods all change. Some regional price differences come with gifting and trading restrictions, so a cheap-region account may not be able to gift to friends elsewhere. And crucially, using a VPN to buy from a cheaper region violates the Steam Subscriber Agreement and can result in purchases being reversed or the account being locked, so it is not a route this guide recommends.

Legitimate Reasons to Change Store Country

Moving abroad is the obvious one, and it is exactly what the feature exists for: a new bank card in your new country validates the change in a single purchase. Students studying overseas, contractors on long placements and people relocating permanently all use it. If you travel frequently but keep your home bank account, leave your store country alone — Steam works fine anywhere in the world and only the download region needs adjusting. Region-hopping also has nothing to do with performance; if games feel sluggish, look at your display and input chain instead, which our gaming monitor buying guide and gaming mouse buying guide both address.

In-Game Matchmaking Regions Are Separate

Steam has no control over which servers a game matches you into. Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, PUBG and most other multiplayer titles have their own region or server selector inside the game’s own settings menu, usually under Matchmaking or Network. Changing your Steam store country will not move you to a different matchmaking pool, and changing your download region will not either. If you want to play with friends overseas, open the game’s settings and select their region there; expect higher ping and accept it as the cost of playing together. Clear comms make cross-region play far less frustrating, and our gaming headset buying guide covers mics that hold up on a busy voice channel.

Steam Deck and Mobile App

On Steam Deck the download region lives in Settings → Downloads in Game Mode, and works exactly as it does on desktop. Store country cannot be changed from the Deck’s Game Mode interface; use desktop mode’s browser or a phone to reach the account details page on the Steam website. The Steam mobile app can view account details but the country change flow still routes through the web checkout. Deck owners downloading large libraries should also read our Steam Deck accessories buying guide for dock and storage options.

Troubleshooting a Failed Region Change

If the country change will not complete, the cause is almost always the payment method. The card must be issued in the destination country and its registered billing address must match. Prepaid cards, virtual cards and third-party wallets frequently fail this check. If you changed country within the last three months, the option is simply greyed out until the cooldown expires. And if a pending change is stuck, contacting Steam Support with an explanation of your relocation is faster than repeatedly retrying checkout.

Frequently Asked Questions About How to Change Region on Steam

Will changing my Steam region delete my games?

No. Your library, achievements, playtime, friends list and cloud saves are all tied to your account rather than your region, so changing either the store country or the download region leaves everything intact. Only pricing, currency and available payment options change with a store country switch.

How often can I change my Steam store country?

Valve limits store country changes to once every three months. If you have changed it recently, the option is unavailable until that cooldown expires, and no amount of contacting support will normally shorten it unless you have a genuine relocation to document.

Is using a VPN to change Steam region allowed?

No. Using a VPN to purchase games at another region’s pricing breaches the Steam Subscriber Agreement, and Valve can reverse the purchases, remove the games or restrict the account entirely. Store country changes are meant to reflect where you genuinely live and bank.

Does the download region affect my ping in multiplayer games?

Not at all. The download region only decides which Valve content server sends you game files. Multiplayer matchmaking regions are configured inside each individual game’s own settings menu, so adjust them there if you want to play on different servers or with friends abroad.
