- The Verdict
The short answer: Mass Effect 2 is the best Mass Effect game. It combines BioWare’s strongest character writing, a brilliant recruit-a-team structure and a final mission where any of your squadmates can die because of choices you made earlier. Mass Effect 3 is a close second, with the best combat in the original trilogy and an emotional payoff to three games of decisions. The best way to play both today is Mass Effect Legendary Edition, which remasters the whole trilogy in one package.
Below, every Mass Effect game is ranked from best to worst, with platforms, what each one does best and who should skip it. You will also find the Mass Effect games in release order, the best add-ons for each entry, how the Legendary Edition changed the trilogy, what BioWare has said about the next Mass Effect, and a shortlist of similar games for when you finish.

How We Ranked the Mass Effect Games
This ranking comes from research, not a new playthrough. We compared critic reception at launch with how each game is viewed today, looked at major ranking lists and fan polls, and checked which versions are easy to buy and play in 2026. Each game was scored against the same four questions:
- Story and characters: how strong the writing, companions and big moments are.
- Choice and consequence: how much your decisions shape the story, including choices imported from earlier games.
- Gameplay: combat, powers, exploration and how well it plays today.
- Value today: how easy it is to get, and in what form.
The main series has only four games, so this list also covers the Legendary Edition, the mobile spin-offs, the best DLC and a set of similar games. That way the page answers the bigger question behind the search: which Mass Effect experience is right for you.
1. Mass Effect 2 (2010)
Platforms: Xbox 360, PC, PlayStation 3 (2011); remastered in Legendary Edition for PS4, Xbox One and PC | Genre: Third-person shooter RPG
Mass Effect 2 opens with one of the boldest moves in RPG history. Commander Shepard dies in the first few minutes, then gets rebuilt by Cerberus, a pro-human group with a shady record. Your new mission is to find out why entire human colonies are vanishing and to stop the alien Collectors behind it. To do that, you recruit a team of specialists from across the galaxy.
That structure is why the game works so well. Each recruitment mission introduces a character with their own problems, and each companion has a loyalty mission that explores their history: Garrus, Tali, Mordin, Thane, Jack, Legion and the rest. The writing in these missions is some of the best BioWare has done. Then everything comes together in the Suicide Mission. Whether each squadmate survives depends on their loyalty, the ship upgrades you bought and who you assign to which task. Few games make your preparation matter this much.
Combat moved closer to a cover shooter, with tighter gunplay and thermal clips replacing the first game’s overheating system. Some players miss the deeper inventory and skill trees of Mass Effect 1, and planet scanning for resources gets tedious. As a complete package, though, Mass Effect 2 is the best balance of story, characters and gameplay in the series.
Best DLC: Lair of the Shadow Broker, a standout story add-on for Liara, plus Overlord and Arrival.
Why it’s #1: the best cast, the best missions and an ending shaped by your planning. Skip it if: you hate character-driven side content. Most of the game’s best moments are in it.
2. Mass Effect 3 (2012)
Platforms: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, Wii U (2012); remastered in Legendary Edition | Genre: Third-person shooter RPG
Mass Effect 3 is the war the first two games were building toward. The Reapers invade, Earth falls in the opening hour, and Shepard has to unite species with centuries of grudges to fight back. Major plotlines from the first two games are resolved here, including the genophage and the conflict between the quarians and the geth. The payoffs hit hard if you carried a save through the trilogy.
It has the best combat in the original trilogy. Movement is faster, cover is more fluid, powers combo well, and weapon customization and weight limits let you shape how often your abilities recharge. The War Assets system ties side missions to the final battle, so helping a stranded fleet or settling an old conflict actually matters. The launch also included a co-op multiplayer mode that many players enjoyed more than expected.
The ending was famously controversial at launch, and BioWare released a free Extended Cut that added more context and epilogues. It still divides fans. Even so, the journey there contains some of the best moments in the series. The Citadel DLC is widely seen as a perfect farewell to the cast.
Best DLC: Citadel, Leviathan, Omega and From Ashes, which adds the Prothean squadmate Javik.
Why it’s #2: the strongest gameplay and the biggest emotional payoffs. Skip it if: you haven’t played the first two. Much of its power depends on history with these characters.
3. Mass Effect (2007)
Platforms: Xbox 360, PC (2008), PlayStation 3 (2012); remastered in Legendary Edition | Genre: Action RPG
The original Mass Effect does the hardest job in the series: it builds the universe. You play Shepard, a human soldier chasing the rogue agent Saren across the galaxy, and you discover a threat far older than any species alive. The Citadel, the Council, the relays, the Normandy and the codex full of alien history all start here, and the sense of discovery is unmatched in later games.
It’s also the most traditional RPG of the trilogy, with deeper skill trees and a bigger inventory. The Mako lets you drive across uncharted planets. The Paragon and Renegade system is introduced here, and choices like the Virmire decision carry through the whole trilogy.
The original release now feels clunky. Combat is stiff, the inventory is a mess, and many side planets reuse the same buildings. The Legendary Edition fixes a lot of this with better aiming, a smoother Mako and quality-of-life changes, so it’s much easier to recommend today than the 2007 version.
Best DLC: Bring Down the Sky, which is included in Legendary Edition.
Why it’s #3: excellent world-building and the start of every major story thread. Skip it if: you can only play the original release. Get the remaster instead.
4. Mass Effect: Andromeda (2017)
Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC | Genre: Open-world action RPG | Developer: BioWare Montreal

View on AmazonAndromeda leaves Shepard’s story behind. You play Ryder, a Pathfinder who arrives in the Andromeda galaxy after a 600-year journey to find new homes for the Milky Way’s species. Nothing goes as planned, and the game becomes a story about exploration, first contact and survival in a hostile new region called the Heleus Cluster.
Its combat is the most fluid in the series. Jump jets, dashes and a flexible profile system let you mix combat, biotic and tech powers freely instead of sticking to one class. The Nomad rover and larger open planets make exploration more varied than the first game’s Mako trips. Some companions, especially Jaal, Peebee and Drack, have real charm, and the loyalty missions follow the Mass Effect 2 model.
The launch was rough, with widely mocked facial animations, bugs and uneven writing. Patches fixed many technical problems, but the main story and villain never reach the trilogy’s heights, and BioWare didn’t release any single-player story DLC. Played today, at a lower price and fully patched, it’s a decent sci-fi action RPG. It just isn’t the Mass Effect most fans want.

View on AmazonIf you are buying a Mass Effect game in 2026, this is almost always the one to get. Legendary Edition remasters Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 with higher-resolution textures, improved lighting and support for up to 4K. It also bundles the single-player DLC and bonus content from all three games, with the notable exception of Mass Effect 1’s Pinnacle Station.
The biggest changes are to the first game. Aiming and weapon handling were reworked, the Mako drives better, and many loading and interface annoyances were reduced. That makes the start of the trilogy far less of a hurdle for new players. Your choices also carry from one game to the next inside the one package, so there is no need to manage separate saves across releases. The one omission is Mass Effect 3’s online multiplayer, which isn’t part of the remaster.

Mass Effect Games in Order
For anyone searching for a Mass Effect video game list in order, here is every release. The story order for the trilogy matches the release order. Andromeda begins at roughly the same time as Mass Effect 3 in the Milky Way, but its story takes place centuries later in another galaxy.
| Year | Game | Platforms at Launch | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2007 | Mass Effect | Xbox 360 (PC 2008, PS3 2012) | Mainline RPG |
| 2009 | Mass Effect Galaxy | iOS | Mobile spin-off |
| 2010 | Mass Effect 2 | Xbox 360, PC (PS3 2011) | Mainline RPG |
| 2012 | Mass Effect 3 | Xbox 360, PS3, PC (Wii U later in 2012) | Mainline RPG |
| 2012 | Mass Effect Infiltrator | iOS, Android | Mobile spin-off |
| 2012 | Mass Effect Trilogy | Xbox 360, PS3, PC | Original-release bundle |
| 2017 | Mass Effect: Andromeda | PS4, Xbox One, PC | Mainline RPG |
| 2021 | Mass Effect Legendary Edition | PS4, Xbox One, PC | Remastered trilogy |
The Spin-Offs: Mass Effect Galaxy and Infiltrator
Mass Effect Galaxy (2009, iOS) was a short top-down action game starring Jacob Taylor and Miranda Lawson before they joined the cast of Mass Effect 2. Mass Effect Infiltrator (2012, iOS and Android) was a third-person cover shooter starring a Cerberus agent named Randall Ezno, and it originally tied into Mass Effect 3’s Galactic Readiness system. Both are interesting footnotes for lore fans, but neither is easy to get today, and neither adds anything essential to the main story.
Original Trilogy Releases vs Legendary Edition
| Feature | Original Releases / Mass Effect Trilogy | Legendary Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Visuals | 2007-2012 graphics | Remastered textures, lighting, up to 4K |
| Mass Effect 1 gameplay | Stiff aiming, awkward Mako | Reworked aiming and Mako handling |
| DLC | Sold separately on many versions | Most single-player DLC included |
| Mass Effect 3 multiplayer | Included | Not included |
| Modern consoles | Xbox backward compatibility for some versions | PS4/Xbox One discs play on PS5/Series X|S |
The older Mass Effect Trilogy bundle from 2012 is mainly of interest to collectors or anyone who wants Mass Effect 3’s original multiplayer on old hardware. Everyone else should buy Legendary Edition.

View on AmazonBest Mass Effect DLC Ranked
- Citadel (Mass Effect 3): a funny, warm send-off for the whole cast, best played just before the final mission.
- Lair of the Shadow Broker (Mass Effect 2): a sharp action-thriller that gives Liara a proper arc.
- Leviathan (Mass Effect 3): reveals the origin of the Reapers and adds context to the ending.
- Arrival (Mass Effect 2): a tense solo mission that bridges into Mass Effect 3.
- From Ashes (Mass Effect 3): adds Javik, a Prothean squadmate with a unique view of the galaxy.
- Overlord (Mass Effect 2): a dark, memorable story about a Cerberus experiment gone wrong.
All of these are included in Legendary Edition, which is another reason to choose it over the original releases.
Which Mass Effect Game Should You Play First?
- New to the series: start with Mass Effect 1 in Legendary Edition and play the trilogy in order. Your choices carry over, and the payoff in Mass Effect 3 depends on it.
- Short on time: Mass Effect 2 works as a standalone game and gives a quick recap of earlier events at the start. Still, you lose the long-term impact of earlier choices.
- Want a fresh start with modern combat: Andromeda needs no knowledge of the trilogy, though it references the wider universe.
- Returning player: try a new class or the opposite Paragon/Renegade path in Legendary Edition. Many conversations play out very differently.
What’s Next for Mass Effect?
BioWare confirmed the next Mass Effect game at The Game Awards in December 2020, and the studio has since focused on it after Dragon Age: The Veilguard launched in 2024. As of October 2026, there is no official title, release date, platforms or new trailer. In public comments during 2026, BioWare leadership has said the team is busy working on the game without giving details. A live-action Mass Effect TV series is also in development. BioWare often shares small teases on N7 Day, November 7, so that is the next date to watch.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best Mass Effect game?
Mass Effect 2 is widely seen as the best Mass Effect game. Its recruitment and loyalty missions build the series’ best cast, and the Suicide Mission ending reacts to your preparation and choices. Mass Effect 3 is a close second for its improved combat and emotional finale.
Should I play Mass Effect in order?
Yes, you should play the original trilogy in order if you can. Choices made in Mass Effect 1 and 2 carry into later games and change characters, missions and outcomes. Legendary Edition makes this easy because all three games share one launcher and carry your Shepard forward.
Is Mass Effect Legendary Edition worth it in 2026?
Mass Effect Legendary Edition is still the best way to play the trilogy in 2026. It remasters all three games, includes most single-player DLC and greatly improves the first game’s combat and driving. It plays on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility.
Is Mass Effect Andromeda worth playing?
Mass Effect Andromeda is worth playing if you enjoy exploration and fast combat and can accept a weaker story. It’s fully patched now and usually sells cheaply. Fans who mainly want Shepard and the original crew should finish the trilogy first and treat Andromeda as an optional extra.
Is there a Mass Effect 5?
A new Mass Effect game is in development at BioWare, but it hasn’t been officially named Mass Effect 5. As of October 2026, there is no release date, platform list or new trailer. BioWare has said the team is focused on development.
Is Mass Effect on Nintendo Switch?
No, Mass Effect Legendary Edition hasn’t been released on Nintendo Switch or Switch 2. Mass Effect 3 did launch on Wii U in 2012, but no Mass Effect game has appeared on a Nintendo console since.
How long does it take to beat the Mass Effect trilogy?
A full trilogy run with most side content typically takes around 100 hours or more in total. Rushing the main stories takes far less, but the side missions and loyalty quests are where much of the series’ best writing lives.
The Verdict
Mass Effect 2 is the best Mass Effect game, with the strongest characters and the most rewarding finale. Mass Effect 3 has the best combat and the biggest emotional moments, and Mass Effect 1 is the essential start of the story, now much easier to enjoy thanks to the remaster. Andromeda is a fun but flawed side trip. For almost everyone, the smartest buy is Mass Effect Legendary Edition: three great games, most of the DLC and your choices carried across the whole saga, ready to finish before BioWare’s next chapter arrives.
