Sebastian lives in the basement of Robin’s Carpenter Shop at 24 Mountain Road, in the Mountain area directly north of your farm. Walk into the shop, head through the door on the right into the family’s living quarters, and take the stairs down; his room is the dimly lit space at the bottom.

He is also one of the hardest villagers to bump into by accident, because he rarely leaves that room. Below is his full routine, the gifts he actually loves, and how to build a friendship with the valley’s most reclusive bachelor.

Where to find Sebastian Stardew Valley hides in plain sight

Leave your farm through the northern exit into the Bus Stop area, continue north-east into the Mountain map, and Robin’s Carpenter Shop is the large building on your left as you approach the lake. Inside, the shop counter is straight ahead; the door on the right leads into the house. From the living area, a staircase descends into the basement, which is entirely Sebastian’s space.

His room is unmistakable: a computer desk, a bed, a fish tank, band posters, and a pet frog in a terrarium. He is usually sitting at the computer with his back to you, because he works as a freelance programmer from home.

Sebastian’s daily and weekly routine

Most days, he is in his basement room. That is the default, and it holds true for rainy days, snowy days and most of the working week. If you want to give him a gift or raise friendship, walking into the basement is nearly always the answer.

There are two reliable exceptions. On clear, warm days he sometimes walks up to the dock on the Mountain Lake, just outside the house, and sits there alone. And on Friday evenings he goes to the Stardrop Saloon in Pelican Town to hang out with Sam and Abigail, which is the easiest place to catch all three at once.

Festival days override everything, as they do for every villager, so do not expect him to be home during the Egg Festival or the Feast of the Winter Star.

His family and why he keeps to himself

Sebastian is Robin’s son from a previous relationship. Demetrius is his stepfather, and Maru is his half-sister. A significant thread in his dialogue is the sense that Demetrius favours Maru’s scientific ambitions over Sebastian’s own interests, and that his family has quietly written him off. It is one of the more grounded pieces of writing in the game, and it explains both the basement and the guardedness.

He is also a musician, playing drums in Sam’s garage band alongside Abigail. That trio forms the valley’s small alternative crowd, and their scenes together are among the best in the game.

Loved gifts: the fastest route to friendship

Sebastian loves Frog Egg, Frozen Tear, Obsidian, Pumpkin Soup, Sashimi and Void Egg. Two gifts per week, each on a different day, is the maximum useful rate.

In practice, three of those are easy to farm. Frozen Tear drops in the Frozen floors of the Mines, roughly levels 40 to 79. Obsidian comes from the Volcano Dungeon on Ginger Island and from Mine geodes. Void Eggs come from a Void Chicken, which you get by hatching a Void Egg bought from the Travelling Cart or dropped by Witch events in your coop. Sashimi is cooked from literally any fish, making it the cheapest reliable loved gift in the game once you have a kitchen.

His birthday is Winter 10. A loved gift on a birthday grants eight times the normal friendship, so save an Obsidian or a Sashimi for that date; it is worth several ordinary weeks of gifting.

Gifts to avoid giving him

Sebastian dislikes most foraged flowers, cooked dishes outside his loved list, and the generic farm produce that pleases half the valley. He is also one of the villagers who reacts badly to universally disliked items such as trash pulled from Crab Pots, Clay and Quartz.

The safest rule is to gift only from his loved list. Because friendship decays slightly each day you fail to talk to a villager, a wasted gift slot genuinely costs you progress rather than merely stalling it, and with only two gifts per week the margin for error is thin.

Heart events and romance progression

As friendship rises, Sebastian’s heart events open up his world. Early events take place in his basement, where you find him gaming or working. A memorable mid-game event has you joining Sebastian, Sam and Abigail for a session of the tabletop RPG Solarian Chronicles in his room, and a later one involves a motorcycle ride out to Zuzu City, where he talks about wanting to leave the valley entirely.

To romance him, keep gifting, give a Bouquet at eight hearts to make the relationship official, then work toward ten hearts and propose with a Mermaid’s Pendant from the Old Mariner, who appears at the beach on rainy days. After marriage he moves into the farmhouse, adds his own room complete with computer setup and aquarium, and parks his motorcycle outside.

Practical tips for tracking him down

If you cannot find him, check the calendar for a festival, then check the weather. On a rainy day he will not be on the dock. If the Carpenter Shop is closed, Robin’s shop hours have ended but the house entrance still works during the day. And remember that entering someone’s bedroom while they sleep does not raise friendship, so visit during waking hours.

Long relationship-grinding sessions mean a lot of screen time, so it is worth having comfortable kit; a gaming headset buying guide covers the clamping-force issues that ruin multi-hour play, and a gaming monitor buying guide explains why panel size and pixel scaling matter for a game with such small sprite detail. Keyboard players navigating menus constantly will appreciate the switch comparisons in a mechanical gaming keyboard buying guide, while Switch and console players moving to PC should read a gaming controller buying guide first.

The game itself is extremely light on hardware, so nobody needs the recommendations in a graphics card buying guide to run it, though heavily modded installs with expanded content load meaningfully faster from the drives discussed in an NVMe SSD buying guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where to find Sebastian Stardew Valley players search for at night?

Almost always in his basement room beneath Robin’s Carpenter Shop in the Mountain area. The exception is Friday evening, when he visits the Stardrop Saloon with Sam and Abigail, making that the single most reliable time to find him outside his own home.

What are Sebastian’s loved gifts?

Frog Egg, Frozen Tear, Obsidian, Pumpkin Soup, Sashimi and Void Egg. Sashimi is the most practical because it can be cooked from any fish at all, while Frozen Tear drops readily from the Frozen floors of the Mines between levels forty and seventy-nine.

When is Sebastian’s birthday?

Winter 10. Giving him a loved gift on his birthday grants eight times the usual friendship points, so it is by far the most efficient single day of the year for building your relationship with him, especially early in a playthrough.

How do I marry Sebastian?

Raise him to eight hearts through gifts and daily conversation, give him a Bouquet from Pierre’s shop to begin dating, reach ten hearts, then propose using a Mermaid’s Pendant bought from the Old Mariner who appears at the beach on rainy days.
