A cheat code in GTA Vice City Stories on PSP is entered as a quick sequence of D-pad, face-button and shoulder-button presses while you are actively playing — unpaused, mid-stride, with no menu and no phone involved. When the sequence lands, a short message appears on screen confirming the effect. Get one input wrong or hesitate too long and the game silently drops the whole string, which is why most “the cheat doesn’t work” complaints are really timing problems.

How a Cheat Code in GTA VCS on PSP Is Entered

Vice City Stories does not use the in-game phone system that GTA IV later adopted, and it has no cheat menu. Everything is a button string entered during free roam. Stand still somewhere safe, press the inputs at a steady, deliberate pace — roughly one press per half-second — and watch the top of the screen for the confirmation text.

Two habits make a big difference. First, avoid entering codes while driving, because your directional inputs also steer the car and you will crash mid-sequence. Second, save your game before experimenting, because Vice City Stories does not let you save an active cheat state and several effects cannot be cleanly reversed without a reload. Handheld play at this length is hard on your hands, and the original PSP’s D-pad in particular is a known weak point — our handheld gaming grip and accessory buying guide covers the add-ons that help.

Weapon Cheat Codes for GTA VCS on PSP

The weapon codes are the ones most players actually want, and they follow a neat pattern: the same directional frame with a different face button substituted in for each tier.

  • Weapon Tier One: Up, Square, Square, Down, Left, Square, Square, Right
  • Weapon Tier Two: Up, Circle, Circle, Down, Left, Circle, Circle, Right
  • Weapon Tier Three: Up, X, X, Down, Left, X, X, Right

Tier one gives you the basic loadout, tier two the mid-game arsenal, and tier three the heavy weapons you would otherwise only see late in the story or by buying them from Phil Cassidy. Entering a tier code replaces your current weapon in each slot rather than adding to your ammunition, so use the highest tier you actually want rather than working up through them.

Health and Armor Cheat Codes

  • Full Health: L, R, X, L, R, Square, L, R
  • Full Armor: L, R, Circle, L, R, X, L, R

These are the safest cheats in the game and the two most worth memorising. Neither one alters the world state, breaks a mission trigger or changes pedestrian behaviour — they simply top you up. The shoulder-button frame makes them easy to fire off quickly, which matters when you are mid-shootout during one of the game’s more punishing Empire defence missions.

Worth knowing: unlike GTA V’s five-minute invincibility, Vice City Stories has no true invulnerability cheat. Repeated health top-ups are the closest equivalent, which means you still have to actually play the fight. If you are running the game through a modern handheld or emulator, latency becomes a real factor in those firefights — our low-latency gaming display buying guide explains how to measure it.

Police and Wanted Level Cheat Codes

Vice City Stories includes cheats to switch the police off entirely and to push your wanted level up or down. The “never wanted” effect is the most useful for free-roam chaos and the most dangerous for story progress, because several missions in the game check your wanted level as a completion or failure condition. With the police disabled, a mission waiting for a chase to begin can sit there indefinitely with nothing happening.

The practical rule: use wanted-level cheats only in free roam, never with an active mission marker on the map. If a mission does hang, reloading your last save clears every cheat effect and restores normal behaviour.

Weather and World Cheat Codes

The weather codes share a family structure too, built around “Up, Down, [button], Up, Down, [button], L, R.” Clear weather is the most commonly used — Up, Down, Circle, Up, Down, Square, L, R — and there are variants for sunny, overcast, rainy and foggy conditions. Vice City’s 1984 skyline genuinely looks different in each, and the game’s neon-soaked evening lighting is one of the best-looking things on the PSP.

Beyond weather, Vice City Stories includes the classic mischief cheats the series is known for: pedestrian riot mode, destroying every nearby vehicle at once, upside-down camera modes and traffic-type modifiers. These are pure novelty, they cannot be saved, and several of them require a reload rather than a re-entry to switch off. That is worth knowing before you enable riot mode two missions from the end of the story. If you are playing on a big screen through a capture setup, our capture card buying guide for handhelds covers the HDMI-out options.

What Cheats Cannot Do in Vice City Stories

Cheats never save. Quit or reload and every effect is gone, which is genuinely a safety feature rather than a limitation. They also cannot touch the Empire system in any meaningful way — you cannot cheat your way into owning a Protection Racket or Smuggling site, because those are unlocked by taking over enemy holdings through missions. Cheats give you tools, not progress.

There is also no money cheat that grants a lump sum the way San Andreas’ HESOYAM does. Vice City Stories expects you to earn your capital through Empire income, which is the game’s actual central system: you buy vacant sites, choose a business type, defend them from Cholos and Mendez cartel attacks, and collect passive income. That loop is why VCS holds up better than most people remember. For long portable sessions, a decent set of headphones does more for the experience than any other upgrade — see our portable gaming headphones buying guide and, if you play docked, our retro-friendly gaming monitor buying guide.

Where to Play Vice City Stories in 2026

Vice City Stories launched on PSP in October 2006 and was ported to PlayStation 2 the following March, with Rockstar Leeds handling development alongside Rockstar North. The PS2 version was later reissued as a PS2 Classic on PlayStation 4, which is the most convenient legitimate route in today. Unlike Liberty City Stories, it never received a mobile remaster, so there is no iOS or Android version.

Story-wise it is a prequel to the 1986-set Vice City, following Victor Vance — Lance Vance’s older brother — through 1984 as he is discharged from the army and drawn into the Mendez cartel’s orbit. Vic can swim, which the 2002 game’s Tommy Vercetti famously could not, and the Empire system gives the map a purpose beyond mission markers. Playing the PSP version on a modern TV means dealing with upscaling, and our HDMI upscaler and adapter buying guide covers that specific problem.

Frequently Asked Questions About GTA VCS PSP Cheat Codes

Why does my GTA VCS cheat code not register on PSP?

Almost always timing. Vice City Stories only holds each input briefly before discarding the whole sequence, so pausing mid-string cancels it. Entering codes while driving is the other common cause, because your directional presses double as steering inputs and the car’s movement interferes with the sequence.

Is there an invincibility cheat in GTA Vice City Stories?

No. Unlike GTA V, Vice City Stories has no true invulnerability code. The closest equivalent is repeatedly entering the full health and full armor cheats during combat, which effectively gives you unlimited recovery but still requires you to survive incoming damage between entries.

Do cheat codes disable saving or trophies in Vice City Stories?

Cheat effects simply do not persist through a save, so you cannot store an active cheat in your file. The original PSP release predates the trophy system entirely, and the PS2-to-PS4 Classic version has no trophy support either, so there is nothing for cheats to lock you out of.

Can cheats break missions in GTA VCS on PSP?

Yes, particularly the wanted-level and vehicle-related cheats. Several missions check your police status or expect a specific vehicle to be present, and overriding those states can leave an objective waiting for something that will never happen. Save before cheating and reload if a mission stalls.
